Local Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort:
(Feel free to forward this message as appropriate - I'm sure others would 
like to know)

This is for those of you in the area or willing to travel a bit (Northern, 
NJ) or willing to make the trip, etc.  I thought you all might appreciate 
knowing about this option.  I hope this doesn't offend anyone.

I am helping to organize donations for a hurricane Katrina relief delivery 
this coming week.  Our local church has been working with a church on the 
outskirts of the affected area and they are organizing the distribution of 
anything we can deliver to them.  We already have an 18' box truck and 
driver donated for a trip and going down early this coming week (9/19 or 20 
I think).  We are thinking of getting another truck or two if additional 
items are received in time.

So far, the relief effort is going well.  The center where I used to hold 
youth meetings with 80+ teens is packed from wall to wall 5' high in some 
places.

We have recently added the following collection times this weekend in case 
you or someone you know is looking for a way to donate items:

9/17 Saturday        1pm - 3pm
9/18 Sunday          1pm - 4pm

ITEMS NEEDED:  Dry storage, shelf-stable items, Hand-held snacks such as 
granola and energy bars, Breakfast bars, Beefy jerky, Peanut butter, Canned 
meals such as hearty soups, stews, chili, and/or pasta, Canned fruits and 
vegetables, Plates, bowls, cups, and utensils, bleach, disinfecting 
household cleaning items, and diapers, and infant formula, Bottled water.

The church is also excepting monetary donations towards the relief effort 
and would be glad to shop for supplies. 100% of what you donate goes to 
Katrina relief.  Nothing is being kept locally.  Period.

If you receive this too late and wish to donate after this weekend, please 
call first.  I am not sure what the plan will be at that time.

FYI - The local candy distributor next to my shop donated around 2000 lbs. 
of light snacks and candy for the children and workers down south - and I 
personally picked it up and delivered it in my Saturn...  That was fun! 
Sure was nice to know that the truck will have items that make kids smile.

This is my home church and I know for a fact they can be trusted with these 
items.  That is why I personally have chosen to give all of my support 
through their network.  I have been working with this congregation for more 
than a decade and have no doubts whatsoever that this is a good avenue if 
you don't already have one.  A number of people have contacted me looking 
for advice and/or ideas on where to give so I hope and believe this message 
will be helpful to some of you.
